ENGAGEMENT STRATEGIES

ACTIVE LEARNING CYCLE

Picture
The Active Learning Cycle incorporates a simple cycle of cues to add to lessons that signal to the students when to learn with a partner (Turn and Learn) and when to give their attention back to the instructor (Return Q + A).  Though these are simple concepts, they are sometimes the easiest parts of a lesson to skip. There are several variations of both pieces of the Active Learning Cycle with examples!

STEPS OR REPS

Picture
Steps or Reps is a whole class management tool that focuses on encouragement and procedures. Steps or Reps is not a competition between you and the students or groups of students versus other students, but rather a way to record the strengths of the class and the areas they need a bit more practice. Steps or Reps is a tool that encourages students to perform to their highest level and notes when some more practice may be needed to get the class the skills they need to cooperatively achieve those goals. The focus is encouragement rather than discouragement.

THE HOMEWORK TICKETS EXTRAVAGANZA

Picture
The Homework Tickets Extravaganza is a highly successful method for getting 100% homework turn in. The most amazing part of all this is not how easy it is to put into place, but how much the students buy into the program.  Be sure to download both the parts of this program below!

Cooperative Learning Classroom Management Cards

Picture

Our Cooperative Learning Classroom Management Cards offer numerous ways for teachers to group their students, from pair-share partners to groups of four.

Our job as teachers in a cooperative classroom is to guide and facilitate the learning experiences of our students by providing them with opportunities to work, share, and discuss in different groups throughout the school day.

FAMILY WORK

Picture
The purpose of Family Work is to flip the time usually allocated for homework with the time used for true family activities.  The homework in Family Work consists of activities for students to do with their families, with a written synopsis of the activities to be turned in at the end of the week by the student.  Family Work is designed to give families time to focus on the things that truly bring out the best in our students.
